2. HOW TO LOOK ATTRACTIVE TO INVESTORS

02 April 2019

This webinar was facilitated by Mr. Ian Tracey, Head of Access to Funding and Finance at the KTN (Knowledge Transfer Network). It focused on the important factors for attracting investors in the Science – Industry environment by demonstrating how to make a pitch to investors. Mr. Tracey also highlighted the key features that investors pay attention to when assessing potential commercial projects.

3. IP AND COMMERCIALISATION FOR RESEARCH ORGANISATIONS

14 May 2019

This webinar tackled an important pillar within the industry – research collaboration context: Intellectual property and patenting. It was presented by experts in the field: Dr. Purewal, a practicing IP attorney (UK and European Patent Attorney) with a PhD in Theoretical Physics, and Dr. Connell, a UK and European Patent Attorney with a PhD in Physical Chemistry.

The speakers introduced Intellectual Property, its creating, ownership and commercialisation. The common pitfalls to be avoided while commercialising IP in a research environment were also presented.

4. OVERCOMING THE TECHNOLOGY MATURITY GAP

11 June 2019

This webinar focused on the maturity gap and a related case at the Cracow University. It tackled the best practices to overcome innovations maturity gap between research technology organizations and the market.

It was facilitated by Mr. Jakub Kruszelnicki, co-owner of the company Creative Labs and OaSIS project coordinator (Optimizing Support of Innovative SMEs).

5. COMMON CHALLENGES IN EXECUTING INDUSTRY-UNIVERSITY PROJECTS

This webinar focused on the common challenges faced while running industry-university projects and assessed their practical threads and pitfalls.

It was facilitated by Dr. Steve Welch, Director of Innovation at the Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN). Dr. Welch showcased the main issues that can occur throughout this kind of collaborative projects and presented suggestions of how these challenges can be prevented.

This webinar focused on the  innovation system of the Technical University of Denmark (DTU), considering its successful technology transfer operation.

It was facilitated by Mr. Michael André Jonsson, Senior Business Development Officer at the DTU. Mr. Jonsson presented the various methods used in Technology Transfer operations as well as the aspects that make an effective process for capturing the value from novel research.

8. TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AS AN ECOSYSTEM

This webinar focused on technology transfer and all the aspects related to its implementation within the Research Infrastructure and the industry. It was facilitated by Mr. Mauro Zambelli, Head of the In-kind Group at the European Spallation Source (ESS). Mr. Zambelli described how Kyma Srl, a spin-off company of Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste, was established and progressively grown from its beginnings in Trieste to the rest of Europe, the United States and China, becoming a world leader in its field and a successful example of technology ecosystem development.

13. Radiation safety aspects of the user-oriented research at the Budapest Neutron Centre

This webinar presented the risk of activation and other visible or non-visible damage when using various neutron-based methods. It was facilitated by Dr. Zsolt KASZTOVSZKY (Nuclear Analysis and Radiography Department, Centre for Energy Research, Budapest), who presented the safety measures put in place at the Budapest Research Reactor, as well as examples based on work on cultural heritage objects.

14. Radiation safety for particle accelerator – synergies between Research Infrastructures and Industry

This webinar addressed the safety aspects based on experiences gained in large scale worldwide particle accelerators, it was facilitated by Dr. Christine DARVE – Engineering Scientist at the European Spallation Source. Particle accelerators play an important role in many functions of today’s society, with over 30 000 accelerators in operation worldwide. Those accelerators can range from tools for discovery to radiotherapy. One of the main challenges to safely operate these tools is the use of radiation-hardened equipment and the compliance with stringent directives.

15. NEUTRONS: A NATURAL TOOL FOR INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH

18. NEUTRON PROTEIN CRYSTALLOGRAPHY REVEALS MOLECULAR DETAILS OF INHIBITOR BINDING TO CLINICAL TARGETS

11 November 2020

Combining the unique information from neutron crystallography with high resolution X-ray crystallography, it is then possible to obtain a complete and accurate view of the interactions that drive ligand binding. This webinar incorporated examples from the literature on where this strategy was employed to investigate novel compounds binding to a cancer metastasis marker, and clinically used protease inhibitors to HIV protease. It was facilitated by  Dr. Zöe Fisher, Group Leader Deuteration and Macromolecular Crystallisation at the European Spallation Source.

21. Spinning Out – The early days define the journey

This webinar focused on how to build a spinout. It was facilitated by Mr. Luca Venza, Director of Technology Innovation, Transfer and Acceleration at the IESE Business School. Among other topics, the speaker shared real life examples of successes and failures of deep science technology experts who have experience with negotiation of shareholders agreements, licensing agreements, company by-laws and services agreements. Moreover, the speaker highlighted the challenges of raising an early stage seed round and how to approach business angels and Venture Capitalists. Best practices and an overview of how strong founding team looks like in the early stages were also presented.
